How do we like Philadelphia’s newest Park? We’ve made many visits to the Race Street Pier experiencing it in the early morning, afternoon, and evening.
The Pier is a wonderful addition to the city and the neighborhood. The design is dramatic with a rising decked walkway on the north-side that ends with a commanding overlook high above the water and a paver brick walkway close to the water on the south-side. The split on the north rises above the river and closer to the rumbling of traffic on the Ben Franklin Bridge. The ever present sounds of cars and trucks is interrupted by rhythmic scheduled dashes on steel rails by Patco trains. Walking down to the lower south-side it feels quieter and the narrow triangle of turf makes for a quieter more contemplative space.
The pier is welcoming in the daylight even if the roads and sidewalk paths are not. No amount of trees, shrubs, or public art can dampen the unpleasant experience of walking under the bridge, past the I95 ramp, and cars speeding past you in multiple lanes
