Windows Phone 7 actually stepped outside the Microsoft box in many ways. A breakthrough product for them. But way too late for the already wowed by iPhone consumer market.

The screen concept and tile based interface along with the idea of scrolling continuously (shown below) are actually pretty impressive. The interface stands out among mobileOS’s, distinctive. But that’s where the out of the Microsoft box thinking ends.

Why in such a super competitive mobile landscape would Microsoft name their mobile OS Windows Phone 7? Simply because the culture in the organization is still stuck in the days where technology buying patterns were determined by IT departments at corporations and Windows brought you job security. Microsoft doesn’t have brand equity as an innovative company.

Apple changed the patterns when employees started saying: “I want my iPhone. Support it.”  After that happened there was no looking back.

Imagine if instead of Windows Phone 7 it was called Meteora or Voxbar or E-blips? Wouldn’t that compete better with iPhone or Droid?

Some smart naming could have made the Windows Phone a contender.

It’s over and we won.

Finally Adobe has come to understand it’s Flash mobile plug-in isn’t worth the trouble. Lucky us. The plugin was crap on mobile and now it seems Adobe got the message.

from Adobe:

Our future work with Flash on mobile devices will be focused on enabling Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for all the major app stores. We will no longer adapt Flash Player for mobile devices to new browser, OS version or device configurations. Some of our source code licensees may opt to continue working on and releasing their own implementations. We will continue to support the current Android and PlayBook configurations with critical bug fixes and security updates.

Not a surprise.

For a fifth consecutive time, Apple ranks highest among manufacturers of smartphones in customer satisfaction with a score of 795 and performs particularly well in ease of operation, operating system, features and physical design. Motorola (763) and HTC (762) follow Apple in the smartphone rankings.

We’ll it has been a wild technology week.

We’ve been catching up on reading and video as quickly as we could. We had watched the twitterstream for #wwdc live as Steve Jobs was ringmaster for a number of presenters. You can watch the Keynote here.

It was exciting to watch where Apple would innovate. The keynote wasn’t so much about innovation as throwing down the gauntlet as Steve Jobs often does – we’re post PC. Remember when he introduced the hard 3.5″ floppy and then just a few years later declared it dead?

Apple is moving us forward in mobile computing when we’re all longing to go there. We want our technology everywhere. We want it wireless and small and easy to use. We don’t want to think about it — we just want it to work.

Apple has the software, the hardware and the imagination to take us there. This developer conference proved they’re working on it.

What if every object could tell its own story? Haven’t you wished that you could just google anything? Well if you use RFID you can get information from any object that has an electronic tag. Each object in a way is a smart object.

If you have a reader attached to a device like a smart device, in this case an iPhone. You can come in proximity of the object and tell you the object’s story. It’s pretty interesting technology that can be used say for touring museums. You step up to a painting or sculpture and put your iphone next to the label. It recognizes the painting and allows you to see content about the work. Add links to sources on the net and an expantion of information based on your interests.

This is a nifty video showing the possibilities of using RFID. If you want to know more Check out this post: http://www.nearfield.org/2009/04/iphone-rfid-nfc
