Windows Phone 7 actually stepped outside the Microsoft box in many ways. A breakthrough product for them. But way too late for the already wowed by iPhone consumer market.

The screen concept and tile based interface along with the idea of scrolling continuously (shown below) are actually pretty impressive. The interface stands out among mobileOS’s, distinctive. But that’s where the out of the Microsoft box thinking ends.

Why in such a super competitive mobile landscape would Microsoft name their mobile OS Windows Phone 7? Simply because the culture in the organization is still stuck in the days where technology buying patterns were determined by IT departments at corporations and Windows brought you job security. Microsoft doesn’t have brand equity as an innovative company.

Apple changed the patterns when employees started saying: “I want my iPhone. Support it.”  After that happened there was no looking back.

Imagine if instead of Windows Phone 7 it was called Meteora or Voxbar or E-blips? Wouldn’t that compete better with iPhone or Droid?

Some smart naming could have made the Windows Phone a contender.

It doesn’t take much imagination to get the difference having a good tablet device will make to media providers/publishers. It actually may awaken the publishing industry to the requirement to provide context and new meaning to the stories they publish. We can google anything we want to on the web, but it is raw data. Context is what is needed and this new portable platform may be just the place for publishers to really get interactive media religion.

Here’s a video to stimulate your imagination.

This collaboration between The Wonderfactory and Time, Inc. is an excellent example of how tablets will enable the creation of innovative, addictive experiences by publishers, media companies, and advertisers.

Just watched this very cool video of Firefox 3.5 and the way you can handle video files and manipulate with javascript and the built in browser controls. It gets crazy when you add clipping paths to video or lay video on video.

Weird. The video acts like a web page.

Can’t wait to play with this.

What if every object could tell its own story? Haven’t you wished that you could just google anything? Well if you use RFID you can get information from any object that has an electronic tag. Each object in a way is a smart object.

If you have a reader attached to a device like a smart device, in this case an iPhone. You can come in proximity of the object and tell you the object’s story. It’s pretty interesting technology that can be used say for touring museums. You step up to a painting or sculpture and put your iphone next to the label. It recognizes the painting and allows you to see content about the work. Add links to sources on the net and an expantion of information based on your interests.

This is a nifty video showing the possibilities of using RFID. If you want to know more Check out this post: http://www.nearfield.org/2009/04/iphone-rfid-nfc

a find at the itunes store

a find at the itunes store

I crawl around the iphone store now and again to add more fodder to my need for an iPhone. Here is a really cool app that solves one of the problems that drives me crazy from time to time. I use my laptop for almost everything — that means no number keys. I hate the extended keyboards because they just take up too much space on my desk.

{ Do you remember when you could buy a numberpad to attach to your keyboard when you needed it? I had one of those clunky beige things that worked by plugging it into my keyboard… I used it for keying in coordinates for objects in my vector files or layout applications. Most of all I used it when creating schedules and I had to put in date fields. }

Well, here’s a sweet little iPhone app that lets you turn your iPhone into a number keypad and it’s wireless. All for $1.99.

One caveat it’s Mac only.

Ah, the beauty of the iPhone platform.
