Market share is earnings by commodity. That’s not and has never been Apple’s vision.
Read MoreThere’s no question in my mind that the most appealing thing about Android as a platform is its overall market share. The more Android devices that are out there, in use, the more appealing the platform is for developers. But to think that market share alone is a primary motivation for all or even most of the developers who’ve turned the iOS App Store into a phenomenon is to miss the forest for the trees. It’s looking at the market from the viewpoint of a spreadsheet, reducing everybody and everything to numbers.
People are infatuated with Apple announcing it. It’s good marketing, but at least as the technological capability you could argue that Microsoft has had a similar capability in Windows Phones for more than a year, since Windows Phone 7 was introduced.
(Microsoft executive Craig Mundie told Forbes about Siri)
Are you kidding me?

Tony Fadell is a name you may recognize; he use to work at Apple on a little product that just turned ten years old, the iPod. He left Apple spent a year in Paris and came back to create a new company Nest Labs. The first product to come to market — a thermostat.
…the architects presented him with the options for the thermostats that would adorn the walls of his perfect home.
They sucked.
“What was wrong with them?” he now says. “They were ugly. They were confusing. They were incredibly expensive. They didn’t have half the features you would expect for a modern thing. None of them were connected, so they didn’t talk to each other. I wasn’t able to remotely control them. In Tahoe, you want to be able check on the temperature of the house or turn it on before you get there. Because it’s really cold in the winter. I couldn’t do any of that, and I was like, Why is this?”
This is disruptive technology at its best.
Don’t you hate your thermostat? I do. It’s an awful white plastic box. Did I program it? No, too difficult. New plan; get a Nest.
As you can see it is a beautifully simple device. A jewel.

Understanding the commitment it takes to create a culture that cares for and maintains brand values was one of the things that Steve Jobs worked hard at. We’ll see what that hard work has done in the days ahead now that Apple has lost him.
Read More“To me, marketing is about values. This is a very complicated world, it’s a very noisy world and we’re not going to get a chance to get people to remember much about us, no company is. And so we have to be really clear on what we want them to know about us. Now Apple fortunately is one of the half a dozen best brands in the whole world, right up there with Nike, Disney, Coke, Sony… But even a great brand needs investment and caring if it’s going to retain its relevance and vitality.”
– Steve Jobs, Discussing the “Think Different” ad campaign, Sept. 30, 1997
