I was asked: “Where does collaboration using technology begin?”

Hmm, social networking is truly a disruptive technology when one thinks about it especially in the workplace. The controlled and hierarchical aspects of most workplaces think collaborative technologies are the next big thing to jump on. However, these institutions don’t take into consideration how the implementation of these tools may change their culture.

Our studio worked for several years at creating a new paradigm for corporate computing at QVC. With their technology group we not only created a common interface and information architecture upon which they would build over time; we created a new way of thinking. Breaking down the departmental walls with the sharing of information.

The initiation of this project came from a visionary IT department that understood that collaboration actually reduced the burden on individual programmers and the department as a whole. It created a need for smarter and innovative technologies that were essential to a company whose very existence was driven by technology. The organization had grown being very entrepreneurial – creating technologies to grow their business by a billion dollars a year. When they hired us their business was more mature and needed to focus on collaboration. Collaboration and sharing are essential to being more efficient.

So, back to the question. Collaboration begins with e-mail. Everyone begins there. The dreaded REPLY ALL is the clog of every corporate mailbox I know. However, the organizations that understood the collaboration/communication needs oflarge organizations bought into Lotus Notes early. Lotus Notes allowed attachments, version control, iterative documents and group leader approval and control.

The kind of tool needed for organizational social networks are driven by the organizational culture. An organization that makes decisions top down needs a different workflow and mental model than an organic organization that allows for free-wheeling collaboration. We often set up wiki’s for our work because they allow us to create our structure on the fly and amend it as needed.

Many Eyes

Got a tweet from Carl Malamud today that led me to this article about Martin Wattenberg. It’s always great to read about a whole yarnball of my interests at one time. Culture, information, visualization, and the meaning we can bring to data by creating context. See an ongoing project at the TATE in the UK. ( MW2MW is a collaboration between Marek Walczak and Martin Wattenberg. Started in 1997, both artists work independently but come together on long term projects such as Apartment, Wonderwalker, Thinking Machine and Noplace.) http://www.mw2mw.com/

These experiments and journeys open up new ways to look at what we see each day in a new light.

The aesthetic is a bit clumsy for my liking still the work at the conceptual level is very intriguing and the visualizations shed light on the snapshots he takes.

Take some time to enjoy these works. Love to know your thoughts.

Applications : writeroom

I found WriteRoom by accident I’m not quite sure how I stumbled upon it. But I love it. Tired of endless toolbars, buttons, change tracker, spelling suggestions and automatic formating? No I don’t want a numbered list. When you launch WriteRoom it takes over your screen and blocks out everything. Nothing to distract you from the task at hand. All you can see are the characters on the screen that come from your keys tapping the keyboard.

One more reason to get a Mac since it only runs on the Mac OS.

WriteRoom is just about you and your text.”

Requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later

The news is that Yahoo has been smart enough to move it’s fabulous Flickr so that we use it on our iPhones. The video capabilities are good news for those of us that present using the video upload at Flickr.

The platform independent Flickr video format will help us all share more. The growth of Flickr as a home for hosting media with easy access has been surging. The ease of use and accessibility are big reasons why.

Another reason for buying an iphone. Look for the new LED super small projectors that will work with your iPhone soon.

Webster’s just picked it’s word of the year. Dan Pink told me.
It’s alot like the interjection in conversations “too much information!” when you want someone to stop divulging things that make you feel terribly uncomfortable or queasy. How about some understanding of privacy yours as well as mine.

defined:
overshare (verb): to divulge excessive personal information, as in a blog or broadcast interview, prompting reactions ranging from alarmed discomfort to approval.
